    It probably doesn’t make a difference as to where you install the core files. I always install WP in the root folder for standard installs. The only time I defer from that is in special situations where I need to integrate WP with other apps, etc.

    The link that @t-p provided has many recommendations for securing WordPress and as long as you keep WP up to date and follow the basic recommendations such as using a security plugin, etc. you should be fine. WordPress is very secure “out of the box”
