Uploading a PDF also generates 4 JPGs of the same file, by BillHam

Whenever I upload a PDF file to my site four extra JPG files are created in my Media Library. This seemed to start around about when I upgraded to WP4.9.1 a week or three ago but I cannot say if it was coincidental.

These extra files are JPG copies of the PDF and are the three different sizes as defined in Settings/Media for Image files plus another presumably standard-sized one. It looks like something is persuading WordPress that PDFs are Image files.

I have already gone down the route of deactivating plugins: I deactivated all of them except my security plugins but this still happens.

The funny thing is that if I migrate my site to wamp/localhost on my own laptop (using All in One WP Migration) these JPGs are not generated when I upload a PDF in that environment. Call me confused.

Does anyone have any clue about how or why this might be happening? My site is single-site and uncomplicated. Using the Weaver Xtreme theme.
