Slow WordPress HTTP API Calls, by Kurieuo

I run a server with many client sites on. I install and used WordPress myself on a few sites. In the past I’d received reports from a customer about WordPress admin being slow at times. And now I’m using WordPress extensively myself, I too experience this.

So I installed a really great plugin called Query Monitors. When an admin pages (especially the dashboard) runs slow, it reports HTTP API Calls in red. Many of these calls take a while and/or fail. Some take as much as 9 seconds. Others 4 seconds or so. Together, sometimes the wait period for a fresh Dashboard visit can be 30+ seconds, which is ridiculous.

Notably, there are quite a number of plugins installed on both websites where there are issues. My server is in Australia, and many of the plugin APIs are in the US. api.wordpress.org itself is in the US which pings 300ms. I can’t imagine I’d be alone with these issues, but then I can’t find anyone else online reporting the same.

If anyone has anything I can do to speed up the administration with API requests, besides moving website to US servers and perhaps setting up CDN, please let me know. I don’t mind editing code, or even stopping non-important API requests that are just checking for version updates or messages from plugins.

    Thanks, Scott
