    Could they be icon images used by your theme? I cannot replicate the behavior on my site, I only have PDFs when uploading a PDF, no extra images.

    There is likely a way to auto delete the images after upload, but it’d be better to prevent the image generation to start with. You need to isolate what module is responsible. Try switching to twentysixteen theme and see if the images stop. If so it is your theme doing this. Otherwise, try deactivating likely plugins until you isolate the source. Check with the responsible author to see if the images can be suppressed somehow.
