Using either FTP or the web hosting manager file manager (probably cPanel), navigate to the <webroot>/wp-content directory and for the “uploads” directory check what are the permissions and what is the ownership ? The directory must be writable by the webserver (php) program, just what this should be varies with your hosting company, ask their support for the settings. It is almost certainly wrong to set the permissions to 777 (let anyone read / write / create anything) as this is a serious security vulnerability, for instance anyone with a hosted account on the same server could do anything, however 777 is often seen on localhosted setups where while it is not great it is harmless enough.
