    When switching to the Visual Editor, all the code is squished together. This isn’t too much of a problem as switching back to the Text Editor and doing an “Update” reformats the code reasonably.

    You’re not meant to switch to preview your changes. The workflow is to use the ‘preview’ button for that.

    When doing an “Update” in the Text Editor, the mark-up is changed. My main reason for using the Text Editor is to avoid having my markup changed.

    Is your markup invalid? Does it happen when using valid markup?

    The changes result in invalid HTML code (for example, adding a closing paragraph tag that has no matching opening paragraph tab.

    You do have a closing paragraph tag, but you’re missing an opening one:

    width="100" alt="icon" /></p>

    These are useful features to help you create valid HTML.

    If you want to disable them, use this plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/dont-muck-my-markup/
