    Ah, I see now, sorry for my misunderstanding. It may be that one of the plugins you’ve tried needs to be hacked to add featured post functionality. One that you are otherwise happy with would be a good place to start. If it has action and filter hooks like WP core does, it might be possible to add functionality without direct hacking. The right hooks can allow for a valid plugin extension instead needing to resort to a “dirty” direct hack.

    You only need to know how to extract the image URL from the feed and the ID of the plugin’s added post. Add an attachment post type for the image with media_handle_sideload(), which returns an attachment ID. Set the featured image for a post by adding a post meta record for that post, key “_thumbnail_id”, its value is the attachment ID. That’s all of it.

    Of course, anyone is still welcome to suggest an existing plugin here, but don’t wait too long before thinking about plan B.
