Came to wordpress.org to check my account, and the site would no longer recognize my email as a registered user (even though I have recent emails from wordpress to that very account.)

First, to be clear, WordPress.org is not connected to your site in any way. If you have never requested support here or contributed to the WordPress project, you likely didn’t have an account here yet.

    Error Establishing a Database Connection

This doesn’t necessarily mean your blog is gone or hacked, it simply means that WordPress can’t reach its database.

Access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel (consult your hosting provider’s documentation for specifics on these), and open the wp-config.php file in a plain text editor: https://codex.wordpress.org/Editing_Files#Text_Editors

You’ll want to first make sure that the database connection details are correct: https://codex.wordpress.org/Editing_wp-config.php#Set_Database_Name

If they are, contact your hosting provider’s support to ask why your database is offline.
