    Yes, it is possible to specify the load order of index pages via .htaccess but I don’t think that is a good idea. I would suggest installing and setting up WordPress in it’s own folder while you set things up. When you are all set, you could use the Duplicator plugin to move WordPress to the root after backing up your current site and clearing out the root of all files. Even though you will only be moving up to the root, a move is a move and the plugin I mentioned will make things much easier for you.
