Need to backdate posts – manually recreating a site, by gponym

I think the short question is: when creating a post by email is it possible to set the original publication date to the correct past date when the post was originally added (to the former site)?

I’ll check back in around 0100 UTC Monday.

I’m helping a friend recreate her blog which was unfortunately totally lost when the small local provider suddenly went bellyup. In short, no backup is available. The site luckily has just a few static pages but over one hundred posts.

I have discovered the joy (!) of creating posts by email (using a generated wordpress.com address) which supports a number of shortcodes. She can do this herself. With one more feature, this email technique would be perfect for her needs.

That feature is: set the original publication date when adding an old post to the new recreated site.

I cannot find a shortcode that will do that?

I have seen that it is possible to created custom shortcodes, and if that appears to be a viable solution, I’ll have a go at it.

I do see how to manually change the post date but would prefer to avoid that, as well as to learn a better way to handle what must be a common enough need.
