Editing CSS in Twenty Seventeen Child Theme, by Christopher Nawoichik

I changed my page width to 1300px using ‘Inspect’ on Google Chrome. When inserting the code into the style.css file of my child theme, it did not work…after many modifications.

However, when adding the code to the custom CSS feature (sidebar: accessed at Customize), it worked.

The problem, is that I want to know why it didn’t work at style.css in the child folder. I would like to customize my child theme the old fashioned way, but don’t know if I am missing something in the line of code to begin with.

*Is it necessary to even use a child theme for my site using Twenty Seventeen—if I want to modify the code for personal use? How often will that theme need updates, which would of course remove my changes?
