Disabling links to the media file in postings, by

When a user adds an image to a post, it automatically links to the media file. When viewed on the site, the image is clickable and will display in a page of its own.

I would like to set my installation to default the link to none. I have searched and found solutions to default the link to none when adding an image directly to the media library, but when adding an image directly to a posting, it’s getting linked to the media file. When I view the image in the media library, the default is showing as none, but it is not respected in the post.

Is there a way I can default the link to none when a user adds an image directly to the posting? I am comfortable with modifying the functions.php file in my child theme and would prefer that to using a plugin.
