Which files do I edit?

    The first one is horribly messy: the templates for those emails are buried so deep, you're pretty much guaranteed to be better off using a plugin to adjust them.     The second would require adding a status (or member level), detecting it on a login attempt and taking them to a specific page. WP doesn't have a "banned" status by default. You'd also have to build that check into every part of the site, or use something like WP-Members to switch off access. Alternatively, you could set the "Subscriber" level up as banned, then use a membership plugin to shut off the site to everyone below "Contributor". That would give them access to public parts but not member parts.

    You can rename existing user levels, by the way. I've got the code for that somewhere.
