facebook advertising is very effective in marketing and promoting local business. Create a facebook page for your business, send like request to the people you are connected on facebook, tell your facebook friends to tell theri friends to like your page. Create an advert of your page and start your marketing campaign. Target the campaign to the people of your region.

Facebook is the best to promote local business. Create a facebook page for your business. You may also join the local groups on Facebook and promote your business there. Paid advertising on facebook can be another good option to promote your business.

Have you looked into Google AdWords and Bing Ads? Both of them frequently offer some initial credits to get you started - usually around $50-$100, but sometimes even more if you make an initial deposit of your own. I've seen Google offer as high as $250 in credits if you deposit $50 into your account.

Pay Per Click can be very costly if you are advertising nationally or globally, but if you are a small business only looking to attract locals, you can narrow down the reach of your ads to only show to those who are within a certain range of your business. This will greatly limit the amount of clicks you are getting per day to something much more manageable so you won't blow through your budget too quickly.

You can also further limit your traffic by only bidding on keyword phrases with geo-specific words in them, such as "plumbers in birmingham alabama" or "pizza shops in washington dc".

Depending on your industry, the average CPC's may still be pretty low too. Something like insurance would generally be rather expensive on a cost per click basis since that's a very competitive niche, but something like a shoe repair shop would probably be well below $1 a click, more than likely lower than 50 cents a click.

Pay Per Click is a great way to jump start some visibility to your site before you start ranking well in the organic search results, which can take months if you are a new site and new to SEO in general.

I suggest you do proper Onpage SEO of your website and select keywords with a location which you want to target. Then start working on Off Page SEO and SMM techniques. For Off Page you should create link on local business listings, social bookmarking, search engine submission and classified sites. For SMM create business pages on social sites FB, Twitter, Google+, Instagram and start sharing your website links, posts, pictures with links.
