We have a florist website with an online shop which consistently runs very slowly. We have made sure that image sizes are small enough and understand that that the host has sufficient capacity to handle our traffic. We have been told that the site should not have been built in WP as it is only for blogs! Ideas and help welcomed

Hmm, sounds like you've already dived in. Usually smushing images will have a small affect on speed, but the host can play a very big part.

To clarify, did you ask your host if you could handle x amount of traffic and they just said yes? Some hosts are not that great and will just tell you what you want to hear when in reality, you're on a shared server used by 1000 other websites, which will put a ceiling on your site's speed. Just be sure to do your research on your host!

You can also try Google's PageSpeed Tool: https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/

It will tell you exactly what adjustments you need to make on desktop and mobile to speed up your website.

I suggest you first check your website link through Google Page Speed Insights where you find all the coding errors which are responsible for your website slow speed. And then hire an expert Web developer who can better understand your site internal and external problems.
