Signatures are still counted as a (one way) link-back to your website, which can have SEO benefits, be it do-follow or a no-follow link.
However, with all the Goggle algorithm updates, signature links have been to a greater degree degraded as they are very easily created and can subsequently alter a websites rankings artificially, thanks also to spammers using signatures as a way to boost or alter their rankings in a way that the serps find undesirable.

For the purpose of this discussion as it pertains to our site, "Signatures" are still used to spam the forums by people that simply sigh up, make one post and leave, never to be seen again having left a link to their website and/or product.

These links can have a benefit to you by sending targeted visitors to your products and services, which is why we have the limitation on signatures which is meant to keep the spammers from benefiting by leaving one low-quality post and reaping any benefit from it.

I actively delete and ban such posts and users to maintain the quality of the content on WP Help Forum :)
