At the very least, you have to consider that some users purposefully filter their search results to only show recent content, such as in the last week or the last 30 days. So if your most recent posts are older than that, you are definitely not going to be showing up in the search results for them. As a general rule of thumb, I think at least a post a week should be a goal when running a blog or web site. If you start to attract repeat visitors, and they try to come back to your site hoping for updates and new posts, you're only going to turn them away if they see that you hardly ever update your site. Why miss out on that traffic? Give them an incentive to come back regularly and you'll start building incremental traffic to your site, not just one time visitors.
